Powerkite Lessons
IKO Powerkite Level 1 (Bar Control)
Prerequisites: None
Who the course is for

The IKO Powerkite Level 1 course is an entry point for people looking to get involved in the world of kitesports and is ideal for those who want the simplicity and ease of use that a bar control system gives. For those looking to progress to de-power control system for either land or water use this course is the best place to start.
It is suitable either for people who have never flown a kite before, or for those with some powerkiting experience who would like to gain the International Kiteboarding Organisation Certification and the skills necessary to either enjoy power kiting in itself or progress onto other kitesports.
What the course covers
We teach to the IKO syllabus as follows. Each student is certified to the level they attain.
Level 1A
- Set-up: kite rigging and ground handling skills
- Is able to run pre-flight checks of equipment
- Understand Safety checks for flying location
Level 1B
- Is aware of the requirement for personal safety equipment for powerkiting
- Is able to check and use kite safety systems
Level 1C
- Can launch and land with an assistant
- Can fly in all areas of the wind window and understand the safety and power zones

- Has achieved basic flying skills - top and bottom turns, infinities and sine wave
- Can untwist lines while the kite is flying
Level 1D
- Can land the kite alone
- Is able to perform a safety pack down
Level 1E
- Can fly the kite with one hand
- Can demonstrate moving with the kite in all wind directions

Dates and Price
Here at Synergy Kitesports lessons are available 7 days per week. We teach land based kitesports all year round, weather permitting.
Prices depend on when in the week you would like your lesson, and if you are coming in as an individual for 1:1 tuition or if you are coming with at least one other person to make a group.
The Level 1 Powerkite course is 3 hours in length.
For Powerkite training courses we teach a maximum of 6 participants per instructor.
What you need to bring
- Sturdy footwear with good grip on the soles
- Wear clothing appropriate to the weather
- Gloves and hat may be needed any time of year
- Waterproofs are advised
- Snacks and a drink if you require
- Sunglasses and sunscreen can also be needed at any time of year, especially for those sensitive to the sun
IKO Powerkite Level 2 (Handle control)
Prerequisites: IKO Powerkite Level 1
Who the course is for
The IKO Powerkite Level 2 course is an entry point for people looking to get involved in the world of kitesports and is ideal for people looking for best performance and maximum control of the powerkite. Flying powerkites on handles gives independant control of all four lines, which makes it the most versatile and efficient control system.
It is suitable either for people who have never flown a kite before, or for those with some powerkiting experience who would like to gain the International Kiteboarding Organisation Certification and the skills necessary to either enjoy power kiting in itself or progress onto other kitesports
What the course covers
We teach to the IKO syllabus as follows. Each student is certified to the level they attain.
Level 2F
- Has a basic understanding of the weather and wind
- Understands the dangers of wind effetcs from obstacles
Level 2G
- Can repeat skills from Levels 1A-1E using a foil kite on handles
- Is able to demonstrate advanced flying skills - reverse launch, brake turns, stalls and power control with brakes
Level 2H
- Can achieve the trick flying moves
- Is able to perform the emergency safety pack down on a handle controlled kite

De-Power Kite Course
Prerequisites: IKO Powerkite Level 1 + 10-20 hours flying experience post-certification.
Who the course is for
The De-Power Kite course is for those who have completed IKO Powerkite Level 1, have gained further flying experience and are looking to move on to de-power foil kites. De-power foils can be used for all land and snow based kitesports and the system is similar to the kites used for kitesurfing, so this course is ideal for anyone looking to progress into these areas.
What the course covers
This course covers all the flying and safety skills necessary to use the de-power foil kites.
This includes use of the harness, looking specifically at the different safety systems used and different flying techniques required, highlighting the key differences between a fixed bridle and de-power foil and the equipment checks necessary.
