Beginner Kite Surfing Course - IKO Level 1 PDF
Pre-requisites: Half day powerkite course is recommended to get the most out of your kite surf course.

IKO Level 1 takes about 2 days to complete.  By the end of this course you would be able to set up and fly both foil and inflatable kites, and to go body dragging in the sea having practised the essential skills needed to safely kite in the water; water relaunching and deep water pack-downs.

Synergy Kitesports run IKO Level 1 courses over weekends, and by demand during the week too, from March to October (weather permitting).  

Level 1ALaunching and Landing

  • Carry and set up the lines and kite
  • Determine the wind direction, upwind and downwind
  • Fly a small kite on the wind window edge, and maintain it close to the ground
  • Know how to stop the kite power
  • Be aware that the kite leash must be worn at all times, before launching the kite and until after landing

Level 1B

  • Be aware of the area where the kite can crash downwind of the pilot
  • Recover the kite and secure it on land
  • Position the kite on request from 9 to 3 o’clock on the wind window edge
  • Launch the kite with an assistant and choose the right angle to the wind
  • Fly the kite in the power area without crashing it
  • Land the kite with the help of an assistant

Level 1C

  • Fly the kite hooked to the harness
  • Fly hooked to the harness with one hand Body dragging
  • Activate the safety system

Level 1D

  • Perform a downwind course by body dragging and using the power of the kite
  • Have control in the water and enter and exit the water alone

Level 1E

  • Re-launch the kite from the water
  • Wind the lines in the water and recover the kite
  • Perform a self rescue in deep water
  • Launch the kite alone on land
  • Identify potential wind obstacles creating lift or downdraft and be able to define the wind direction, understanding the dangers of practising with onshore and offshore winds.

For all kitesurfing courses please bring along: Warm clothes for wearing on the beach. Wetsuit - These can be bought or hired at Granite Reef in Aberdeen. Wetsuit boots and wetsuit gloves are advised. These can be bought at Granite Reef in Aberdeen. Lunch and drinks. Hot drinks are advised.
